PROJECT DESCRIPTION
To meet the demands of the current healthcare workforce, Hawkeye Community College (HCC) reconfigured its health science building, Grundy Hall, to be an all-encompassing and immersive learning space for students. The new facility includes a dental clinic, science labs, and hybrid health labs. In addition, the simulation facilities and active learning classroom labs help to create a multi-disciplinary hub for students to prepare for the workforce.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

  • The mechanical system design included central variable volume air handling units with sensible heat-pipe energy recovery.
  • The heat is supplied from campus steam and central chilled water from a new water cooler chiller on grade with backup chilled water from the campus chilled water system.
  • The laboratory’s compressed air, vacuum, exhaust, and space pressurization control systems were designed to support instructional laboratory functions.
  • The electrical power and fire alarm systems were designed to support instruction, simulation, clinical, and socialization functions.
  • A natural gas-powered emergency generator was provided for emergency and optional standby loads, including backup of the dental clinic.
  • The electrical power, lighting, and ventilation systems were designed to support an ambulance bay addition.
  • The lighting system includes architectural LED lighting controlled through a fully networked lighting control system.
  • Cable tray and low-voltage pathways were provided.
