Matt Sargent P.E.
Growing up on a farm, Matt became very interested in the mechanical aspects of the business. Also passionate about art and music, architectural engineering became the perfect avenue to merge all his interests. This led him to graduate from Iowa State University with his bachelor’s in mechanical engineering.
Projects like the University of Iowa’s Hancher Auditorium directly connect Matt’s interests while providing him with the opportunity to work with a world-class architecture and design team at the same time. The project’s goals required extensive coordination of the mechanical and plumbing systems, resulting in a beautiful space that is functional and energy efficient. Matt enjoys challenging projects, especially laboratory buildings which require careful planning and implementation to operate safely and efficiently. In these buildings, the engineering design is crucial to creating a space where students and researchers can make medical advancements that will improve and save lives.
Many resources are used throughout the construction process, which can become wasteful, especially in “green grass” buildings that involve tearing down an existing building to construct a new one. For this reason, Matt keeps sustainability at the forefront of his designs. He makes engineering decisions and recommendations that maximize the lifecycle of a building and its systems for both new and existing buildings.
