PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Built as an open-concept school in 1972, Edmunds Elementary was troubled by design issues that resulted in noise, lack of privacy, and poor storage options. In May 2012, ground was broken for the construction of a new facility just north of the existing building. Remaining operational throughout construction, the new building features modern security, technology, energy efficiency, and classroom environments.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

  • The system used to provide heating, ventilating, and air conditioning includes two pipe fan coil units with individual room control. Cooling and heating water is produced utilizing water-to-water heat pumps and a ground-coupled (loop field). An electric boiler provides backup heat.
  • The building service voltage is 480Y/277 volt, three-phase, four-wire, sized with an extra 25% capacity for future growth.
  • The lighting for classrooms, the cafeteria, and the multi-purpose room consist of recessed, high-efficiency, volumetric fluorescent fixtures. Occupancy sensors were provided to control lighting in all areas except the electrical and mechanical rooms.
  • The facility was provided with a microprocessor-based, addressable fire alarm system complete with addressable control relays. The system was interfaced with an integrated security system.
  • A complete “wet-type” fire sprinkler system was installed throughout the facility.
  • The facility was provided with a data and communications cabling system, including raceways, cable trays, terminal boards, cable, equipment racks, patch panels, punch-down blocks, cable management hardware, and work area assemblies.
  • A microprocessor-based, one-way communications intercom/public address system was provided.
  • Designated doors were provided with an intrusion detection/card access system. Motion sensors with loudspeakers were provided at locations designated by the Owner. Door position switches were installed at all exterior perimeter doors.
