PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Iowa Clinic South Waukee Campus is a two-story facility comprised of an outpatient surgery center and medical office building. It hosts a multitude of The Iowa Clinic’s specialties. It offers clinic spaces, orthopedics, pediatrics, physical therapy, sports medicine, urgent care, laboratory, medical imaging (MRI, CT, and X-ray), and support spaces. The outpatient surgery center contains three general outpatient operating rooms, a cardiac cath lab, and on-site sterile processing. It represents the first orthopedic robotic-assisted total joint replacement service in the state.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

  • The facility’s design plan is to share back-of-house services to maximize square footage while creating separate unique entries for the medical office building and ambulatory surgery center to simplify patient wayfinding.
  • Electrical systems were designed to support two future additions: a two-story addition to the medical office building (~17,000 SF) and a second floor on top of the ambulatory surgery center (~20,000 SF) to double the number of operating rooms at the site.
  • Two paralleled 500 KW generators provide a level of redundancy on day one and allow for future ambulatory surgery center expansion without having to replace or add generators or associated distribution equipment, minimizing downtime. The client
had the second 500 kW generator available, and we were able to incorporate it into
    the design.
